1980's Sound Design
Sound Designers of the 1980s
Charlie Richmond was the first USITT Sound Design Commissioner and served on the USITT Board of Directors for many years. He helped fight for and establish the legitimacy of the sound designer as an equal creative collaborator in theatrical productions. He founded Richmond Sound Design in the 1970s, a company which a sound console called the Model 816, which was created specifically for theatrical use.

Abe Jacob, sometimes called the Godfather of Broadway Sound Design, worked on many of the major Broadway musicals in the 1980s. In fact, his sound design for Pippin was the first time a sound designer had worked on a Broadway show from the very beginning. Among his other works are the original productions of A Chorus Line, Evita, and Chicago.

A Broadway sound designer of the 1980s, John Bracewell is perhaps most well known for his contribution of a book entitled "Sound Design in the Theatre", which is considered a foundation of sound design education.

Bob McCarthy recieved the USITT Achievement Award in 2014 for his contributions to sound design for the theatre in the 1980s. His work on the development of the Meyer Sound SIM audio analyzer and his book Sound Systems: Design and Optimization were landmarks in the field.

ADM 800 Series mixer
The ADM 800 Series Mixer was just one of the custom built audio mixers of the 1980s. Radio stations, television networks, and recording studios often had them custom built to their specifications. More examples of custom made sound boards can be found at the link below.

The Sim Audio Analyzer, invented in 1986, won the Mix Magazine's TEC Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement in Aucoustics Technology. It was based on the HP 3582A FFT analyzer and was the first of it's kind for source independent measurement of sound. The company continues to release newer generations of this same software, the most recent being the SIM 3, developed in 2003.
